While I've noticed about a dozen characteristics high-performing boutique consultancies share, I can narrow them down to four large categories. This is not based on scientific research or data analysis. Instead, it’s based on my observations working in the trenches of consulting for many years. 

 

As always, I hope to create a bubble of calmness with my bi-weekly ‘think piece’, a place of stillness in the face of everyday stress—a chance to reflect on what really matters in your consulting work.

I encounter the same story almost weekly: a small, struggling consultancy trying to be everything to everyone. They stretch their limited capacity thin and never get beyond small-ticket, one-trick pony consulting projects. As a result, they have to chase new clients constantly, leaving no time to develop existing ones. In their misguided ambitions, they keep inventing new services, thinking it will ultimately land them bigger projects. Fast forward two years: the consultancy owner hits burnout, and half of the overstretched team has left. I just don’t get this short-sighted, self-destructive mindset that leads these consultancies nowhere.
